faint hopeI try to remember my childhood not frequently, it was difficult times when Ukraine just got independence and everything was crushed, my parents could hardly earn money for the food and I never dreamt of a new skirt or a pair of jeans – I often had to wear clothes after my older sister who was much taller than me and clothes never fitted. I had one friend out of classmates who often laughed at my old and shabby rucksack. I remember her words when I refused to go to the theatre because of the lack of money “Just don’t tell me rubbish, the cost is smallness, anyone can afford it”. But not me...Can I describe the pain of a little girl that absorbs the offense and rebels against the whole world? I never managed to receive affection from my parents because they were stressed by the economical questions and quarrels. When I had 10 years old I decided that I have to learn well, to become intelligent and then I will surely find a well-paid job. That was my dream and the plan of saving my future life from poverty. And I studied only with that thought, but the “elixir” of happiness vanished when I started to work…I understood that no one gives a chance to young and inexperienced people, everyone wants to spare by underpaying and everyone thinks only about his own problems and business. So there is no opportunity for a young person to provide a normal life. Nowadays in Kiev an apartment with 1 room costs at least 120.000 dollars, and a salary that it considered to be medium – 500 dollars. So if I eat nothing and spend nothing, in 20 years I will have a place to live in…And in Ukraine such questions don’t worry any politician…we have political chaos now…because we haven’t still decided whether to be a friend of Russia, Europe or USA? WHO CARES? People just want a normal life… And our people have one peculiarity – they don’t sit and wait for the better times but search for them…statistics say that about 3,6 million of ukrainian people are working abroad now…and a lot of young girls who married the foreigners and immigrated. Some people call them mercantile and traitors. But what is a national dignity when you exist like an animal and your children grow the moral cripples? The conclusion that I made – it is no use believing in pink reality and no use to expect something from the government…Almost every politician promises great life and no one really ensure it. Where people should take optimism to continue to struggle? I don't want to dramatize the situation...I believe that miracles happen...Everyone of us just should know the value of what we already have and what life gives to us... All the world's a stage (from Shakespeare's "As You Like It")All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
As William Shakespeare wrote, our life is like a stage and we always assume different roles. And each human life has the same phases…still we have different parents, different surroundings, amount of money, characters…and so our lives different…we have different welfare conditions…someone has everything by doing nothing (children of rich parents), someone has everything by doing everything (rich workaholics), someone has nothing by doing everything (Chinese communist workaholic population) and someone has nothing by doing nothing (lazybones)…we also have different happiness…someone has 5 children and dote them upon…someone – great husband/wife and that is all that she/he desires…someone has a liberty of traveling and feels free like an eagle in the sky…For each of us happiness has its own and particular meaning…
And what is happiness for me at the present time? Maybe…observing my dreams being realized by my own efforts…perfection of myself…changing the world into better one…making people feel affection to our complicated and chaotic life and universe…feeling that at least one person is in need of me and knowing that my life has a purport ... 13 Phrases About Life (by Gabriel Garcia Marquez)1.
